Angel Kitty (written by Suzie Mitchell)

There was a little girl named Michelle. She had to go with her parents to live in a country far away from her home in the United States. The country was called Japan. She went to school with other children but Michelle couldn't speak Japanese, so it was hard for her to make friends.

------------ One day, a small kitten appeared at her school. He didn't appear to have a home, so he lived at the school. The children took turns feeding him little pieces of food from their lunches. Then one day, the principal saw the kitten and he said thay the kitten could not live at the school anymore. He asked if someone could take the kitten home with them to live. Immediately, Michelle raised her hand and asked if she could hace the kitten. The principal said okay, if her parents agreed.

----------- The next day Michelle brought a note from her parents that said she could have the kitten, so she brought him home that day. She named her kitten Toyono. She thought that he should have a Japanese name since he was a Japanese kitty. Toyono loved living at Michelle's house. He would wait patiently by the front door everyday for Michelle to come home from school. Michelle would open the door and Toyono would start purring and rubbing against her to say "hi".

----------- Michelle would play with Toyono every day with a ball of yarn. She taught him how to fetch. She would throw the yarn ball and he would bring it back to her. One day, not too long after Michelle brought Toyono home to live with here, Michelle's parents told her that they would be going back to the United States to live. Michelle asked if Toyono could come too. Her parents said that she could bring her kitten back to America with her. Michelle had to get a pet carrier for Toyono to live in for the long airplane ride back to the United States. At first, Toyono was a little scared and meowed, but then he settled down and went to sleep for the rest of the trip.

---------- Michelle, Toyono and her parents moved back into their big house in the city. Toyono loved Michelle's new house. It was big and had lots of places for kittens to hide. The new house also had a big yard for Toyono to play in. Michelle would take Toyono outside to play every day. He liked to climb the trees and chase the leaves on the grass. Sometimes he would even try to catch a bird, but he wasn't fast enough.

--------- Toyono liked going outside so well, that one day he went outside without Michelle. Someone left the door open and Toyono decided it was much too nice a day to stay inside, so he ran outside to play. But Michelle was at school, so Toyono didn't have anyone to play with. Just then, Toyono saw another kitten across the street playing in the yard. Toyono was thrilled to see another kitten to play with and ran out into the street to go see him. But Toyono didn't look both ways before going into the street. He didn't see the big car coming very fast down the stretch and just as he was starting to cross the street, the car hit him and Toyono got hurt.

----------About the same time, Michelle came home from school and saw him by the street. Toyono was hurt pretty bad. Michelle and her parents took Toyono to the animal hospital so that the doctor could help him. But it was too late. The doctor said Toyono had died. Michelle asked what "died" meant. The doctor told her that Toyono could not go home and play with her anymore. He said that Toyono's little body had gotten hurt so badly that he could not be fixed. He also told Michelle that Toyono's little kitten spirit would live on in her memories of him and that maybe he would go to heaven to be an "angel kitty".

---------- Michelle wiped away her tears and thought of Toyono being an "angel kitty" in Heaven for all of the little girls and boys that were angels, too... and that made her smile.
